Conegliano: The Easy Way Into the Prosecco Hills

Conegliano is the eastern end of the Prosecco hills and the easiest part to reach: direct trains from Venezia Santa Lucia take about 50 minutes and cost €6.60. In a few hours you can see the castle museum, the frescoed Contrada Granda, Cima da Conegliano's 1493 altarpiece in the Duomo, and the outside of the wine school founded in 1876.

What it is

Conegliano is the old town at the eastern end of the Prosecco hills. It gives the DOCG half its name. It’s also home to the Scuola Enologica, founded by royal decree on 9 July 1876, which calls itself the first school of winemaking in Italy (school history).

What to see

  • Castle and Museo Civico del Castello (Piazzale S. Leonardo 7): the museum is in the castle tower. It has archaeology, frescoes and paintings by Pordenone and Palma il Giovane, and a panoramic terrace at the top. Tickets €3, reduced €2 (Visit Conegliano).
  • Duomo and Sala dei Battuti: begun in 1345. Inside is Cima da Conegliano’s altarpiece of 1493, a Madonna and Child with angels and saints. The façade’s nine pointed arches were frescoed in the late 16th century. The Duomo is open daily 8:00–12:00 and 15:00–19:00; the Sala dei Battuti opens on weekends (Visit Conegliano).
  • Contrada Granda: the old main street (Via XX Settembre, Piazza Cima and Via Beato Marco Ongaro), lined with palaces such as Palazzo Sarcinelli (1518) and the Monte di Pietà, whose façade is frescoed with angels (Visit Conegliano).
  • Scuola Enologica G. B. Cerletti: a working school, so see it from outside.

How to get there

  • Train: direct from Venezia Santa Lucia, about every 20–30 minutes, 50–68 minutes, €6.60. From Mestre, 37 minutes, €5.85.
  • Car: 63.8 km and 48 minutes from Piazzale Roma via the A27.
  • Airport: 53 km (38 minutes) from Venice Marco Polo.

The station is a few minutes’ walk from Piazza Cima. See getting there from Venice.

Time needed

Three to four hours for the old town, castle and Duomo. Add a winery visit or the bus west to Valdobbiadene for a full day. Check the castle hours first: on Tuesdays and Wednesdays it opens only in the afternoon.

Frequently asked questions

Is Conegliano worth a day trip from Venice?

Yes, especially without a car. It's the only part of the Prosecco hills with a direct train from Venice (about 50 minutes, €6.60). The old town, the castle and the Duomo fill a morning, and you can add a booked winery visit or a bus to Valdobbiadene.

What are the Conegliano castle museum's opening hours?

Monday 10:00–14:00, Tuesday and Wednesday 14:00–18:00, and Thursday to Sunday 10:00–13:00 and 14:00–18:00. Tickets are €3 (€2 reduced) (Visit Conegliano, checked 23 September 2026). Hours change, so check before you go.

Is Conegliano in the UNESCO site?

Conegliano is in the UNESCO site's buffer zone. The core zone runs from Valdobbiadene to Vittorio Veneto through 12 other communes (UNESCO site management). The town is still part of the Conegliano Valdobbiadene DOCG.
