The Prosecco Region of Italy: How to Visit the Hills
About an hour north of Venice, steep vineyard hills make Prosecco Superiore. How to spend a day there, with or without a car.

The Prosecco hills run between Conegliano and Valdobbiadene, about an hour north of Venice. Direct trains reach Conegliano in 50 minutes for €6.60, but the vineyards are spread across steep hills with few buses, so a guided day tour or a car is the practical choice. Wineries usually need a booking.
The hills are the point. Around Valdobbiadene, vines grow on slopes so steep that much of the work is done by hand. UNESCO listed the landscape in 2019 for its “hogback” hills and ciglioni, narrow grassy terraces of vines used since the 17th century.
Conegliano is the easy way in: a real town with a castle, a railway station and a school of winemaking founded in 1876, which calls itself Italy’s first. Valdobbiadene, at the other end, sits right next to the Cartizze hill.
The easy option: a one-day tour from Venice with one or two family winery visits and, usually, lunch. With more time, stay a night in the hills and drive the Prosecco Road.

Frequently asked questions
Where are the Prosecco hills?
In the Veneto region of north-east Italy, in the province of Treviso. The hills run between the towns of Conegliano in the east and Valdobbiadene in the west, 33 km (20 miles) apart by road. This is the area of Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG, and since 2019 a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Can you do the Prosecco hills as a day trip from Venice?
Yes. Direct trains from Venezia Santa Lucia reach Conegliano in about 50 minutes, and the drive from Piazzale Roma to Valdobbiadene takes about 1 hour 7 minutes. A guided day tour from Venice is the easiest option, because the tour drives you between wineries and you can drink. See getting there from Venice.
Do you need a car to visit the Prosecco hills?
Not if you take a tour. On your own, a car is the practical choice: buses link Conegliano and Valdobbiadene on weekdays, but they don't reach most wineries, and we found no Sunday timetable for that route. If you drive, someone in the group has to skip the tastings. Italy's drink-drive limit applies.
Do you need to book Prosecco winery visits?
Yes, in most cases. The Strada del Prosecco's own winery-visit programme says booking directly with the winery is required. Many wineries are working farms, not shops with opening hours. A booked tour or tasting avoids the problem.
What is the difference between Prosecco DOC and DOCG?
Prosecco DOC can come from 9 provinces across Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia, mostly on flat land. Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG comes only from 15 hill communes between the two towns. The best-known hill, Cartizze, has its own 107-hectare sub-zone. More in where Prosecco is made.
When is the best time to visit the Prosecco hills?
Late April to June and September to October. Spring brings the Primavera del Prosecco wine shows in the villages (13 March to 14 June in 2026). The harvest usually starts in early September. July and August average highs of about 30°C on the nearby plain. See best time to visit.
