Asolo, Italy: The Hill Town Next to the Prosecco Hills
Asolo is a small hill town in the province of Treviso, about 23 km by road south-west of Valdobbiadene. It isn't part of the Conegliano Valdobbiadene DOCG: its hills make their own wine, Asolo Prosecco DOCG. People come for the old town, the Rocca on Monte Ricco, the civic museum and the views. There's no railway station; take the train to Bassano del Grappa and MOM bus 112 (Monday to Saturday), or drive about 1 hour 12 minutes from Venice.

What it is
Asolo is a small hill town in the province of Treviso, with about 8,900 people (Wikipedia, Italian). It’s one of the “Borghi più belli d’Italia” and the poet Giosuè Carducci called it the “town of a hundred horizons” (same source).
It’s not in the Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG. The hills around Asolo and the Montello make their own wine, Asolo Prosecco DOCG, a denomination since 2009 (renamed from Colli Asolani in 2014) (Wikipedia). It’s protected by the Consorzio Vini Asolo Montello, founded in 1985. See where Prosecco is made for how the two DOCGs fit together.
What to see
- The Rocca: a fortress on Monte Ricco above the town, built between the late 12th and early 13th centuries (Wikipedia, Italian). Tickets €5.
- Museo Civico: in the 15th-century Palazzo della Ragione. It holds archaeology, paintings and items linked to the actress Eleonora Duse. Tickets €7 (Museo Civico di Asolo).
- Castello della Regina Cornaro: Caterina Cornaro, the former Queen of Cyprus, held Asolo from 1489. Her castle now houses the Teatro Eleonora Duse (Wikipedia).
- The Duomo: reworked by Giorgio Massari in 1747. Inside is Lorenzo Lotto’s Assumption altarpiece (Wikipedia, Italian).
- Sant’Anna cemetery: Eleonora Duse is buried here (Wikipedia).
- Villa Freya: the house of the travel writer Freya Stark. Until 24 January 2027 it hosts an exhibition of Klimt’s graphic works; the museum offers reduced tickets with it (Museo Civico di Asolo).
Nearby: Villa Barbaro at Maser, by Andrea Palladio with frescoes by Paolo Veronese, part of a UNESCO World Heritage site (Wikipedia). It’s about 8 km by road from Asolo (OpenStreetMap routing). We couldn’t confirm its opening hours.
